Sport3000 - ultraviolet EP REVIEW

7.3/10
Daring, thrilling, and retro, "ultraviolet" is your gateway to an 80s sci-fi blockbuster.

Greetings - it's me again. Today, we're reviewing a new EP from late night lo-fi artist Sport3000.

Sport3000 is a vaporwave artist who's been making music since 2016 - they're definitely one of the most recognised artists on the late night lo-fi scene, receiving critical acclaim for albums such as "Eternal Intermission", "TEXT", "dilate", and many more.
And that brings us to today, with their newest project - a brief EP titled "ultraviolet".

This release feels daring and exciting, from the crawling bassline on "demons" to the hard-hitting guitars on "déjà vu". A lot of the sounds on here definitely bring me back to the classic vaporwave style that was present back in 2012-2013. This EP is your gateway through to an 80s sci-fi blockbuster.

The EP kicks off with "demons" which is probably my favourite track here. This song sounds really spooky and mysterious and it's backed up by some seriously hard-hitting drums. It's a super strong way to begin the EP.

This song is followed up by the title track, "ultraviolet". I'm somewhat indifferent towards this track - I think it overstays its welcome quite a bit, even though I do enjoy a lot of the instrumentation.

I should probably mention before moving forward that this thing isn't for everyone. This EP is pretty cheesy, and it'll probably bring back lots of awkward memories of 80s training montages and bad green screen effects. This isn't me insulting the album but it might get a bit much for some people - but if you can get past that, you'll definitely find something to enjoy here.

After this we get the track "déjà vu" which is another great moment for the album - this one actually sees Sport3000 incorporating vocals from the original material very heavily, and they fit very well into the general vibe of the album. The guitar stabs give the track a lot of momentum and it's super catchy. Definitely one of my favourites from this project.

Then we have the song "embrace" which is probably my least favourite, just because I think the song doesn't have that much to make it interesting like the other songs do. I don't really have too much to say about this one.

The EP closes off with "blinded by the lights" which is a very strong closer. The track has a very nice rhythm to it and the key change towards the end is great too.

Overall, I think "ultraviolet" is a great EP - it's had some moments that have really stuck with me, and if you think it sounds like something you might enjoy, you can check it out up above!
